Wine region Marche

Vins Espagnols

Snuggled between the Apennine valleys and the Adriatic, the Marche region is home to a contrasting selection of vineyards that reflect its particular location between the hills in the hinterland, with their harsh climate, and the temperate influence of the sea.

While the conditions in the hinterland are especially well suited to white wines, it comes as no surprise that the best reds come from the vineyards close to the Adriatic coast.

Thanks to its favorable climate, with warm summers, harsh winters and increased precipitation in spring and autumn, Lombardy produces mainly high-quality wines, such as the famous Franciacorta (renowned Italian sparkling wines) and the excellent red wines made from clones of the Nebbiolo grape (known locally as Chiavennasca) grown in the province of Sondrio in Valtellina, such as Sfursat di Valtellina.

Some of the region's best red wines are produced south of Ancona, capital of the Marche, mostly from Montepulciano grapes only. Over recent decades, the use of this variety has resulted in quality reds replacing the white wines, which are appreciated for their light and fresh character.
