A province located between Le Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and Molise to the south, Abruzzo is mostly occupied by mountains and hills which provide natural conditions which are extremely favourable for viticulture.
The hills overlooking the Adriatic to the east, at the foot of the high mountain massifs of the Apennines, are covered with vineyards up to around 600 metres above sea level. These high plots, much like the vineyards near the Adriatic, have a very balanced climate despite their low latitude, which makes for rich wines without any excessive heaviness.
With over 80,000 acres of vineyards, Abruzzo dedicates the majority of its agricultural land to viticulture. Although the wine region is amongst the least-known in Italy, it produces one of the most popular red wines in Italy, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
