SICILIAN WINE PACK
Discover Sicilian wines with this boxed set of three different vintages. As Italy's southernmost wine-growing region, Sicily has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the time of the Phoenicians, the famous merchants of the Mediterranean basin. The contribution of grape varieties from Greece, as well as cultivation and winemaking techniques, led to the development of the island's wine industry.
This pack of wines will take you to the heart of Sicily's wine-growing terroirs and help you discover the diversity of its native grape varieties. Whether white or red, these three vintages will give you an insight into the soul of the island and its people. It's a tasty journey full of character, where local grape varieties grow on soils that are often poor and volcanic, producing wines of remarkable elegance.
Discovering Sicilian grape varieties
Start your tasting journey with the Olli cuvée from Feudo Maccari. Located in the south-east of the island, thirty minutes from Syracuse, Feudo Maccari is a winery created by the famous Tuscan producer Antonio Moretti Cuseri, owner of the Sette Ponti and Podere Orma estates. Its Olli cuvée is made from Grillo grapes, the youngest of the old varieties. This highly aromatic variety has a nose of white flowers and citrus fruit. Vinified and matured exclusively in stainless steel vats, the wine is full of sapidity, freshness and elegance. An ideal aperitif or seafood accompaniment.
The second wine in this set is Néré. Also produced by Feudo Maccari, this red wine brilliantly showcases another of the island's most important grape varieties: Nero d'Avola. A Sicilian grape par excellence, this variety is currently the most widely planted in Sicily. This wine is vinified and matured exclusively in stainless steel vats. The vines grow on predominantly chalky soils, giving the wine a freshness that makes it a pleasure to drink. Notes of plums and violets mingle on the nose; the wine is juicy and fruity on the palate, with pleasant, mellow tannins. The finish is crisp fruit with a touch of freshness.
Let's end this island journey with a wine produced by Planeta. Considered to be one of the island's leading wineries, Planeta is a company that operates throughout Sicily, with various vineyards that showcase both indigenous and international grape varieties. Frappato is one of those varieties that can only be found in Sicily. It is thought to be the result of a cross between Sangiovese and an as yet unidentified local variety. It is grown in the south-east of the island, in the Vittoria district. On the nose, notes of aromatic herbs and fresh berries. On the palate, its structure is based on a good fresh structure with pleasant, delicate tannins. The finish is thirst-quenching and fruity.
